On the grounds of the Shepherd is a public sculpture garden titled the Charles McGee Legacy Park, which honors the life and contributions of the late Detroit Icon, whose career as an artist chronicled the Black experience and sustained optimism regarding the future of Detroit and its people. McGee completed the designs for the three large-scale figurative sculptures prior to his passing in February of 2021, which derive from previous works the artist made between the years of 2008 and 2017 and are intended to encourage daily play and creative discovery. The permanent installation is generously supported by Jennifer and Dan Gilbert and JJ and Anthony Curis, in partnership with the nonprofit community organization Jefferson East Inc.
